Ten year old school friends Ellie Johnson (right) and Grace Heaton represented Tamborine Mountain College in the Gatorade Queensland Kool Kids Triathlon series on Sunday 19th April. It was an early start for the girls having to leave the mountain at 4am for the early morning event at Raby Bay in Brisbane. Ellie’s a seasoned tri competitor and encouraged Grace to bring her competitive swimming success over to give triathlon a go!
The girls swam 100m, cycled 2km and ran 400m. Grace placed 2nd in the first-timers category with a time of 11min12sec, and Ellie placed 3rd in the 10-11yr girls category with a time of 10min34sec.
Overall 98 girls aged 7-11 competed on the day, and Grace, who represents TMC at regional level swimming, was the first one out of the water in a time of just 1min3sec. But Ellie’s outstanding performance on the bike (5min54sec) saw her move from 20th out of the water to 3rd place after the ride, finishing 4th out of 98 girls overall. Grace says, “My first tri was fun! I’ll get faster on the bike and improve on my 15th place overall next time!”
Grace’s dad Shane Heaton showed his support for the girls by competing in his first tri at the same event – a 200m swim, 5km ride and 2km run. “If you want to get fit and improve your health,” says Shane, “consider joining the local triathlon club and book yourself into a short triathlon. It was good motivation to get fit again, and good fun!”
