Good afternoon parents and guardians,

Monday’s P-12 Awards and Graduation Ceremony was a huge success for the College and a big hit with students, staff and families.  The move to the Arts Centre on the Gold Coast allowed us to have the entire College present in one venue.  It was fantastic to see the children and so many parents there to congratulate the award winners and celebrate a successful year for the school.  I do believe that every child in the Primary is a star and each and every one of them receives positive praise and acknowledgement on a daily basis.  It is difficult to sometimes single out students for awards, so I think it timely to remind all families how much we value all of the children at our school.

Kind regards,

Mark Stevens

2018 Stationery Lists

The School Locker, our new uniform and stationery supplier, is taking 2018 stationery orders for our Primary school.

It is compulsory for Year 1 – 6 students to have all the items on the stationery list for the start of Term 1 each year.  Prep students are provided with stationery equipment by TMC.  If you already have some of the items on the list, these can easily be deleted online before processing your order.  Orders received by November 24, 2017, are guaranteed to arrive before January 22, 2018, (start of Term 1) and will qualify for FREE DELIVERY.

The School Locker is an online store which is a convenient way to order from the comfort of your own home, but it does also have a store located in Loganholme (near Harvey Norman) if you would prefer to shop in person.  When you shop in-store please ask for the TMC rebate card that gives a rebate from in-store purchases back to the College.
Day For Daniel – Cyber-safety Talk
Scott Guerin, from our local Tamborine Mountain Police Station, came out to give an informative talk on cyber-safety this morning.  Child safety is always in the forefront of our minds, but in particular, the Day for Daniel offers us all a time to focus on the practices that we can all develop to help our children.  The main points that Scott addressed were:
  • Children should not have Facebook accounts below 13 years of age because the content on FB pages can be ‘adult’ in nature
  • Other social media platforms (i.e. Instagram, Snap Chat etc.) are used by strangers to contact children if left in a ‘public’ security setting
  • There are apps available that people can use that can change an adult voice into a child’s voice, so children should not trust someone they do not know in person when speaking to a stranger over the Internet
  • Never allow children to give out personal information – names, addresses, the school they attend etc.
  • Photos that include school uniforms can be used by strangers to identify children when posted in social media
  • Passwords should never be shared

What I found most confronting about the talk was when Scott asked for a show hands for the following two questions:

  • Who has heard foul language being used on websites?  Nearly 100% of the children put up their hands.
  • Who has spoken to someone they do not know in the ‘real world’ while online?  About 25% of our children said they had.

When asked for my advice, my number one rule for families is to have the family computer set up in the lounge/common room of your house.  This way, if there ever is an issue online, your child will be in a very open space to let you know what has happened and they won’t feel isolated like they might if they are accessing websites from their bedroom.

Student Representative Council Salvation Army Christmas Food Drive
The Primary SRC are proud to be involved in the Salvation Army Christmas Food Drive.  Students may bring in donations from now until the end of the school year which the Salvos will pass along to families in need.  The Christmas period is the often the saddest time for many groups of people doing it tough and it was wonderful to see how excited the SRC students were when they heard that there is something they can do to help.  Please bring donations of non-perishable food, Christmas decorations, table decor or additional grocery items to your child’s classroom.  Thank you for your support!
