Good afternoon parents,

A beautiful, wet school day on the mountain is drawing to a close.  It is lovely to see the fog rolling in around our Primary campus.  I know the students really do enjoy wet days – getting to hang out inside with their friends and teachers playing games is great!

There have been a lot of things going on around the Primary campus over the last week and we have plenty of events coming up in the calendar.  Don’t forget that the College Calendar is available on our website and it is regularly updated with events throughout the year.  Try to make it part of your family routine to check the calendar once a week. It can be found here: http://tmc.qld.edu.au/college-calendar/.

I hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter.  As always, if you have any questions or comments do not hestitate to communicate with your child’s teacher or come by my office for a chat.

Kind regards,

Mark Stevens

Head of Primary

Junior Hinterland Independent Alliance (JHIA) Interschool Sports Day

On Thursday, June 8, students from Years 3 – 6 will travel by bus to the Tamborine Mountain Sports Centre for an interschool sports day.  Hills College from Jimboomba has confirmed that they will join us for a day of fun competition.  JHIA days aim to provide our students with a challenge while building skills and sportsmanship.  Sports on the day will include netball, soccer, touch football, ultimate frisbee, and other enjoyable games.  Students will leave the College at 9:30 am to travel to the sports fields and return at approximately 2:30 pm.  There will be a sausage sizzle available on the day – if you are able to assist with this please contact Tim Guymer on [email protected]

Astronomy Night

Next Wednesday, May 24, the College will host an Astronomy night on the Secondary oval. It’s a new moon with both Jupiter and Saturn visible. We hope to sell hot chocolate and snacks to raise funds for our Kokoda Challenge. Telescopes will be set up between 5:30 and 8 pm. All College families are welcome to attend.

Story of Success – Fynn Lesslie – Snowboarder

This year, Tamborine Mountain College has its first official competitor in the NSW Interschool Snow Sports Championships.
In July, Fynn Lesslie from Year 2, will be competing in the Snow Championships, which are held on Mount Perisher. Fynn will be one of the youngest competitors, at just 7 years of age.
Fynn has been snowboarding since the age of 5 and instantly showed a natural talent for the sport. Since then, he has undergone many months of intensive training during the snow seasons, to develop his skills even further. Last year, Fynn was approached by one of the representatives affiliated with the Snow Sports and was invited to compete in this year’s championships.

Fynn is very proud to be representing Tamborine Mountain College in the sport of snowboarding!

Head Lice Policy

Hope your head doesn’t get too itchy while reading this!

It is Tamborine Mountain College policy that all children with live head lice in their hair are to be taken home for treatment.  We have had a couple of outbreaks this term and it is important that all families take the time to follow the procedure for getting rid of head lice before sending children back to school.  This procedure MUST include follow-up scalp inspections to catch eggs that may have been missed and therefore hatched.  The key is to get them before they get large enough to lay another generation of eggs!

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

‘Fidgets’ and Toys at School

The latest craze, ‘Fidgets’, and toys, in general, are not allowed at school as they create unwanted distractions from learning during class time and possible disputes during break times.  Please ensure that your child is not bringing toys to school in their bag.

Animal Welfare League Free Dress Day – 23 May

ICAS tests are a national, standardised group of tests devised by the University of New South Wales.  These tests are voluntary – each test requires a minimum number of entries from the student-body to make it viable to run.  All children who complete the ICAS tests are issued with a certificate after the test papers have been assessed.

I would like to hear from parents (Years 3-6) who are interested in having their child/ren sit the following tests (after each subject is the closing date for entries in brackets, followed by the sitting date, and the associated cost of the test):

  • English (23 June) – 1 August $9.90 (this test is taking place as minimum numbers have already been met.  It is not too late for your child to have their name written down for this test)
  • Mathematics (23 June) – 15 August $9.90 (this test is taking place as minimum numbers have already been met.  It is not too late for your child to have their name written down for this test)

** Please email me on [email protected] if you are interested in having your child/ren sit the test/s.  Let me know your child’s name, their year level and which test/s they will be sitting. **
