As we approach World Teachers’ Day on 25th October, I want to take a moment to celebrate the wonderful teachers here at TMC and reflect on the incredible work they do every day. Despite the challenges of a global teacher shortage and high teacher movement nationally between schools, we are fortunate to have a full complement of dedicated and talented teachers. Their passion, expertise, and commitment to providing an outstanding education are at the heart of our school community.
According to recent research released by the AEU, teachers across Queensland are struggling under the pressure of increased workloads and changing societal expectations. Since 2020, over 12,000 teachers have left the profession in Queensland alone, highlighting the seriousness of the teacher shortage crisis. At TMC, we are grateful to not only have all our teaching positions filled but to also have attracted high-calibre educators who bring energy, innovation, and compassion to their classrooms.
World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity for all of us to show our deep gratitude to the teachers who go above and beyond each day for the benefit of our students. It’s a time to reflect on the positive impact they have on young lives and acknowledge the significant role they play in shaping the future. I encourage all members of our school community to take a moment on this special day to express your thanks to the teachers of TMC, whether it’s a kind word, a note of appreciation, or simply recognising their efforts and contributions.
The importance of supporting teachers cannot be overstated, and this includes ensuring a safe and respectful working environment. To further this, we are introducing a new Parent Code of Conduct, which will be launched at the start of 2025. This policy reflects our commitment to providing a workplace free from psychosocial hazards. Under Section 29 of the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act, it is important to remember that all persons in the workplace, including visitors and parents, must take reasonable care for their own health and safety and ensure that their actions do not adversely affect the health and safety of others.
A parent’s actions can sometimes unintentionally create a psychosocial hazard for our staff. This could include instances of written or verbal aggression, excessive demands, or expectations of immediate responses outside of working hours. Such behaviours can lead to stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges for teachers and staff, impacting their well-being and ability to perform their duties effectively. The new Code of Conduct will outline clear expectations for interactions between parents and staff, ensuring that we maintain a respectful and supportive school environment for everyone. We encourage all members of our community to work together to uphold our values of Kindness, Integrity, Equity, and Success, ensuring TMC remains a safe and positive space for our teachers to thrive.
As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day this year, let’s come together to acknowledge the dedication of our teachers and to demonstrate our collective support and appreciation. They are at the core of what makes TMC the exceptional place it is today.
Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to celebrating our wonderful teachers with you.
