After the impact of Cyclone Alfred, with some of our families still without power, our Principal and Heads of Schools fired up the BBQ today to serve a warm meal to all our students and staff.

In times of challenge, TMC comes together, supports one another, and looks out for each other. We are so proud to be part of a College that doesn’t just teach values but lives them.

At TMC we sure do bring the unity to community!

This week, both our Year 8 and Year 10 students have been exploring chemical reactions. Our Year 8 students have been exploring the concepts of chemical and physical changes, conducting experiments with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar and excitedly observing balloons expand from the gas produced! Year 10 students have also been investigating factors that influence the rate of chemical reactions. The students previously conducted an experiment examining how altering the surface area of an aspirin tablet and the temperature of water affects the rate at which the tablet dissolves. This week they were designing an experiment to investigate a specific aspect of reaction rates that sparked their personal interest. There were definitely a few students who chose reactions with sherbet powder so they could have a tasty treat afterwards!

Due to the impending cyclone, the original timing for this webinar was not an option for many parents.  Considering this, there will be a repeat opportunity to attend this webinar next week. The webinar will be on how we utilize Mathspace in the secondary school in Years 7-10 to support student learning, with the intention to empower parents and guardians with the ability to navigate and utilize the online platform from home with their child. This webinar will be hosted via Google meet and the details to join the meeting will soon be emailed out to all Year 7-10 parents/guardians.

Griffith University Sciences continues to offer Griffith Chem and Griffith Phys - as part of our Head Start At School program (formerly known as GUESTS At School). These 2-year courses are available to senior high school students to study over Year 11 and Year 12, in parallel to their Senior Chemistry and Physics studies. These 100% online courses are equivalent to first-year university courses, and include many of the topics covered in the Year 11 and 12 Chemistry and Physics syllabuses. These courses therefore provide additional resources for students and teachers, to facilitate both learning and teaching of these senior science subjects.

All costs of these courses are covered by Griffith University, and students who pass Griffith Chem or Griffith Phys will be eligible for Guaranteed Admission to one of more than 70 single and double degrees, and may be eligible for an offer to study at Griffith before they receive their ATAR or IB diploma results.
They will also receive credit for a 1st year Chemistry or Physics course in a range of Griffith Sciences and Health degree programs, and two (2.00) adjustments to their selection rank when applying to eligible Griffith undergraduate degrees as part of our Year 12 Subject Adjustment Scheme.

These courses have been designed for the students to work through them completely self-paced and independently, but some schools offer some short before/after school sessions throughout the year to keep the students on track (we do find that this helps in terms of pass rates). The students must also sit the online exam in a classroom under supervised conditions, so there will be some supervision from the school required for this.
