A Walk Through Asia with Year 6

Throughout this term we have been learning about countries in Asia. We have learnt about trade, aid, imports and exports. We have learnt that all these things are critical for everyone's daily life, no matter the person or race. Resources such as coal, petrol, livestock, food, minerals and gold are all things that are major imports and exports.

Aiding other countries is more than just sending armies or teachers; it involves a lot of depth and work. In many of our countries poverty is extreme and life for the poor is a daily struggle. Australia has helped by funding scholarships for young people to study so that they can get a decent job and maybe earn enough to make life a little easier. We also distribute canned goods and bottled water to places that are having droughts or other natural disasters. This is just a few of the many ways that we aid other countries.

6 VIC and 6 VAL merged together into 11 groups for our HASS unit, ‘A Walk Through Asia’. Each group was assigned an Asian country by Ms Molloy and Mrs Brown. Over the past few weeks each group has worked together to create a stand for our country, using our soft skills and leadership skills to organise desks, backboards, writing pieces, artistic skills and our imaginations. This experience has been nothing like what we've done before. We have worked with determination to incorporate all of this into our stands.

As an opening to our Exhibition we performed a traditional South Korean fan dance for the parents, teachers, Principal and guests. This worked with our dance unit, which has focused on cultural dances, to represent the Asian countries. Throughout the afternoon each group entertained everyone with unique games, stories and information originating from our countries. Each stall had maps, animals, indigenous people and Australia's relationship with that country. We have all worked together to create something truly special for us all. To wrap up the whole experience we performed a Bollywood dance, which had lots of movement and emotions, as an ending to this wonderful experience.

Year Two Decade Dress-Up Day: A Journey Through Time

On Tuesday September 10th, our Year Two students took a step back in time as they participated in a Decade Dress-Up Day, celebrating the fashion and culture of various decades. This exciting event was not just about having fun in fabulous costumes, but also served as a meaningful way to enhance our students' learning in Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS).

As part of the curriculum, students have been exploring how life has changed over time, with a focus on advancements in technology and shifts in society. The dress-up day allowed them to connect their classroom learning with a tangible experience, bringing the past to life in a vibrant and engaging way. We took a trip back in time even as far as the gladiator era! We travelled through some perilous decades filled with pirates, bush rangers and cowboys and then went on to the simpler times of the early 1900s. Along came the slick look of the 50’s reminiscent of Grease lightning, the flower power of the 70s and then on to the fluorescent and flammable fabric of the 80s! The 90s came a hip hopping in with Blockbuster cards and back to front T-shirt’s, as well as some double denim thrown in for good measure. We fast forwarded some more and with a skip hop and a jump through the 2000s we finished up in the 2020s.

The event provided a platform for students to develop a deeper understanding of the historical contexts they've been studying. By immersing themselves in the fashion, music, and cultural trends of the past, they could better appreciate how society has evolved over time.

Overall, the Decade Dress-Up Day was a resounding success, not only in terms of creativity and fun but also as a powerful educational experience. It allowed our Year Two students to build meaningful connections with the decades they've studied, fostering a greater appreciation for the changes and continuities that define our modern world.
