This week we celebrated National Science Week, Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. This year’s theme was “Species Survival - More Than Just Sustainability”. Across campus from Pre-prep to Year 12, we held special activities to celebrate.
On Tuesday, we had a Brain Break Morning Tea where students came along to compete and have fun doing some Science Quizzes. Shortly after, our Pre-preps from the Early Learning Centre had the opportunity to visit the Science Labs for some demonstrations and hands-on activities run by our Year 11 Chemistry class and their teacher, Ms Ross.
On Wednesday, Mr Schonherr brought the Year 5 classes across to the Science Labs with some visiting scientists from the University of Queensland to conduct analysis of Owl Pellets (more to come on that!).
Throughout the entire week, Prep-Year 12 were invited to compete in a Butterfly Camouflage competition, and Mrs Andrews and some other guest “butterfly hunters” visited the classrooms to see how many butterflies they could spot from all the students who camouflaged them around the room. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore the concepts of species survival, and how butterflies are a great example of how camouflage can aid in the survival of their species.
Both a primary and secondary class will be the lucky recipients of a prize for creating outstanding camouflage butterflies! It has been a great pleasure to witness so many students across the College embracing a love of Science this week.
