Year 5 Term 4 Overview

This term, Year 5 will be exploring a wide range of exciting topics across all subjects. In English, students will dive into the world of Poetry, studying various forms such as odes, ballads, limericks, and shape poems. They will learn about the key elements of poetry, including rhyme, rhythm, figurative language, and sound devices, with assessments focused on composing their own works.

In Mathematics, our focus will be on Data and Chance, where students will analyse different types of data and graphs and explore chance through experiments. Problem-solving will be enhanced using Think Mentals & Mathletics, and assessments will test their understanding of data interpretation and probability.

For Science, the spotlight is on Light. Students will learn how light behaves, including reflection, absorption, and transmission, and how it interacts with different materials. Hands-on experiments with light and shadows will help deepen their understanding.

In HASS, we will investigate Natural Hazards, specifically focusing on bushfires, their causes, and the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples fire practices. This will include examining the environmental conditions that lead to such hazards.

In Design & Digital Technologies, students will get creative with 3D Printing, using TinkerCad to design and build boats. They will also be introduced to the basics of algorithms and app design, with design assessments throughout the term.

In Health, we will focus on Interacting with Others and managing emotions. Students will discuss changing relationships, the importance of consent, and how to ask for advice. An assessment will help solidify their understanding of these crucial life skills.

Finally, in The Arts, our Drama unit will have students creating a Soundscape and refining their embodiment and performance skills. In Visual Arts, students will explore Shadow Art, using light and materials to create imaginative artworks.

It’s going to be a dynamic and creative term, full of learning and discovery!

Year 5 Dive Into Swimming Lessons

This week marked the exciting start of swimming lessons for both Year 5 classes, and what a splash they made! Our students took to the water like fish, confidently practising their strokes and thoroughly enjoying the experience. Whether it was freestyle, backstroke, or diving, the enthusiasm was clear to see, and it’s fantastic to watch their swimming skills grow.

Swimming lessons will continue for the next five weeks, helping students build confidence and improve their technique. This will all lead up to the much-anticipated Swimming Carnival, which will be held on Friday 8th November. We can’t wait to see the energy and team spirit on display during the carnival. Get ready for a fun and action-packed term in the pool!

After-School Tutoring Resumes

After-school tutoring will resume this coming Tuesday (Week 2) and continue through to Week 8 this term. If we believe your child would benefit from attending these sessions, you will receive an email with further details.

Light Science and Shadow Art Project

This week, students began investigating the fascinating properties of light in their science and art lessons. Over the weeks ahead, they'll engage in a range of hands-on experiments to deepen their understanding. To participate, each student needs to bring a small torch (flashlight) for use in class activities. These torches are essential for the experiments planned, so please ensure your child is prepared.

Reminder: Join Us in Supporting OzHarvest

Our Prep to Year 12 OzHarvest Collection Drive is underway, and we need your help to make a difference! Year 5 students are asked to bring in toiletries such as deodorant, toothbrushes, soap, shower gel, and hand sanitiser to support those in need.

Don’t forget, the class that collects the most items will win a special prize! Collections run from Week 1 through Week 8, so let’s come together, show our community spirit, and make a positive impact!
