Term 3 Week 2

We are pleased to welcome some international visitors to the College from China, France and Italy. It is always exciting to share educational experiences and I know our students have made them very welcome.

We have a special Prep Open Morning coming up on Thursday 17th August 9.30 – 11am. If you have family or friends looking at Prep for next year please invite them to come along to this morning. Our current Preppies will buddy up with the little visitors so that a fun morning is had by all. Parents will be able to meet the teacher, Mr Fern, as well as Head of Primary, Mr Stevens and me of course.

Important events next week:

  • Tuesday – College Photo Day.  Please ensure your child is on time for school and is dressed perfectly in uniform with neat hair and polished shoes.
  • Wednesday – Year 7 History excursion: Heroes of the Colosseum
  • Wednesday night – Intermediate Debaters Quarter Finals!

Uniforms and Stationery Packs – as at the end of this term these items will no longer be available on campus. We are out-sourcing to School Locker – an online company that will take all your orders and deliver, as well as providing a service for you to go to their shop in Loganholme if necessary. A big thank you to all those parents who have volunteered and assisted with this in the past. We will be commencing a new building project in Term 4 – Administration. The Uniform Shop will be removed, as will some of the other buildings at front of school, to make way for this construction area. It is a very exciting project that will make an impressive entrance to our fabulous College for 2019!

P&F meeting Wednesday 9th August 2pm – Uniform Shop.

The Commonwealth Games Passport is available from Reception for $5 and gives great discounts at local businesses – please support this worthy incentive by the Chamber of Commerce.

Please be advised that on Fridays, all students need to be in Form at 8.30am for our Circle Solutions Pastoral Program.

We welcome Ms Schinckel who replaces Ms Vains for the rest of the year, whilst Ms Vains is on Maternity Leave.

Enrolments 2018. We are currently taking enrolments for next year for every year level, particularly Prep and Yr 7. Ensure your child/ren are enrolled if you wish them to start here next year – we are filling fast.

Mrs Fiona Stevens, Head of Secondary, who has been on maternity leave is back part-time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

New Building Project: The new building is the Maureen Nicholls Learning Centre (MNLC) and will be completed by the end of the year.

Absences need to be communicated to the office as a priority, to assist parents we have created an Absences notification tool on our website available 24hrs 7 days per week. Please email [email protected] advising of student name, reason, date from – to, or you may use the student absences form here.

TMC Masterplan is available for viewing on the website at College / Campusso please have a look at what is planned!

OP1 and UQ Excellence Scholarship valued at $24,000 was achieved by our Dux in Yr 12 last year – congratulations to Eden and to all our Yr 12 students who did us proud.

Bus information: Secondary – reminder for the year 7 students residing on the Mountain that utilise TM Coaches. As the Government data shows they have transition to high school a new BTA (Bus Travel Assistance application) needs to be completed and submitted asap. Student data is showing non-eligibility for transport assistance until form is lodged and drivers will need to receive cash payment for travel in the meantime.  Bus Drivers have copies of the BTA forms or they can be downloaded from Qld Transport website. BTA form link

Speech Night and Primary Awards Morning –  New arrangements will be put in place this year. We now hold a complete campus event (Prep – Yr 12) at the Arts Centre on the Gold Coast. TMC Awards & Graduating Ceremony will be a daytime happening on Monday 23rd October 2017 – times will be confirmed but at this stage we believe it will start at 10am and conclude by 12.30pm. We will organise buses to take our students down and back. If you are attending your child may go with you and leave with you. We hope that by giving this much notice, it will enable you to put this important event into your schedule for next year. A daytime event will be wonderful – similar to graduation events at universities. We hope to see you there in the Arts Theatre, which is a fabulous venue, capable of holding 1,200 people.

Yr 4 Music Program 2017 – Tamborine Mountain College is pleased to announce the Year 4 Curricular Band Program will begin in 2017. Instead of taking general music classes, all Year 4 students will learn a band instrument. There is no better way to study music than to learn an instrument and play in an ensemble!

Each child will receive free instrument hire and free tuition in small groups. In Term 3 students will begin Year 4 Band, with rehearsals scheduled during class time. Throughout the year students will have the opportunity to observe more experienced musicians in concert. The Year 4 Band will perform at the end of year Music Concert at TMC.

Why learn Music? Learning an instrument helps students to develop perseverance, self-discipline and confidence. Importantly, research shows that learning to play a musical instrument in childhood is associated with a higher IQ and stronger academic performance (Google search: “APA Music Boost IQ and Grades” for one example). It provides a creative outlet for emotional expression, and gives students the opportunity to make friends with students in various year levels. Plus, it’s fun!  See below for a short clip on how learning to play an instrument (as opposed to just listening to music) actually changes your brain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0JKCYZ8hng&index=17&list=PLVjY3pBVW3kHDgZFZF5kpdUBjLr6crQWI

Snack-shop Please be aware that any order must be received before 9.00am or the night before for Subway on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some parents are emailing or phoning orders very late in the morning and we cannot fulfil these requests. If a child is ever without food and an order has not been received or placed, then we always have emergency supplies available at the office.

Census – For your information, in line with State and Federal guidelines, TMC collects data on students to include in census requirements for all schools.

Circle Time is our pastoral care program for the entire campus. It is an excellent approach to addressing student issues and concerns in a safe and caring environment.

Parent/Guardian help – TMC Policy is for visiting parents that are attending to the school for any other means than collecting their student must sign in at the office and wear a Visitor’s pass. Furthermore, Parents are not to use student toilets – this is mandatory for safety reasons. Parents can use the disabled toilets only. There is signage to that effect.

Forms – On the website there is a Forms link for parents to download forms as required. Also online payments are now available on our website for creditcard payments for tuition/excursions/uniforms.

Late students  – must report to the office to sign-in before proceeding to class. This is extremely important due to the need of accurate attendance records in the advent of an emergency.

Digital Resource Centre (DRC) – Digital Library. Our Digital Resource Centre started operating in Term 4 last year.To access the DRC you will need to use your child’s TMC email address and password. For those unsure of your email address, it should be the initial of your first name, then your last name, with @tmc.qld.edu.au at the end. Please see your child’s teacher if you are unsure about the password.  A step-by-step guide of how to access the DRC is here, including Apple & Android apps.

Don’t forget to check our community bulletins here.

Kind regards

June Melbourne
